The never-ending cycle…

The whole thing feels like you’re stuck in a never-ending roller coaster of pain and stress, you can’t get out.

When my back pain started, I was a fairly young woman in my 30s. I was a physiotherapist, so I should have been able to treat my own back pain…or so I thought.

I was wrong. I thought that knowing what the problem was – having a diagnosis – was all I needed to fix my back. The problem was that I didn’t know how to fix it for good…and neither did anyone else.

And I knew what had caused it in the first place – a riding accident I’d had in my 20s. But having a diagnosis and knowing the original cause didn’t help me solve the problem.

Sometimes, I’d be free of pain for months at a time.

BUT THE PAIN WOULD ALWAYS COME BACK.

And I never knew what was going to set it off again. I was stuck in a cycle of pain, relief, and pain again. I was always anxious – anticipating the next bout of pain.

Even when there was no pain, I couldn’t completely relax and enjoy it, because I KNEW it was waiting for me – lurking just around the corner.

I Became The Back Pain Bitch

When I was in pain, I was a different person…The Back Pain Bitch. The pain affected all areas of my life.

Maybe Getting Permanent Back Pain Relief is…Impossible

I decided that it might just be impossible to solve my back pain. That permanent back pain relief was never going to happen for me. Accepting that my life would never be the way I dreamed seemed like a good option.

The frustrating part was I should have been able to get better. Because I had great resources – I received treatment from excellent PTs, I did my exercises (most of the time), took Motrin, iced and I had an occasional trip to the chiropractor.

But these things didn’t give me permanent relief.

My Back Story

My name is Lindy, and I first started to get back pain after I was thrown from a horse at a party on a ranch in Colorado. Although I’d been a bit of a rider in my youth, I never really felt comfortable around horses, and this one was WAYYY above my skill level.

Even before I got on the horse, a voice in my head told me that this was a REALLY DUMB thing to do. But I did it anyway.

For many years after that, I suffered from periods of debilitating pain, followed by times of complete relief. I just never knew what would set the pain off, and was constantly worried that I might “do something” to put my back out again.

The problem was that I could never figure out what the “something” might be. As a result, I never gave life 100% – I was always anxious, in case I hurt my back again.

As a physical therapist who was supposed to know what to do to help other people with their aches and pains, I felt like a real hypocrite. Who was I kidding? I felt like a fraud. A failure.

Over the years, some really unhealthy habits started to creep into my life. I stopped being consistent with exercise. I ate like crap. I began drinking way more alcohol than was good for me. I just gave up on myself.

I knew better than to treat my body like a garbage can. And yet here I was, putting unhealthy food and alcohol into my body, sleeping poorly, constantly yelling at my husband and children for no reason. I hated myself.

My life no longer had a purpose.

The Big “Ah Ha” That Changed My Life…

I stumbled on the “solution” I’m about to share with you through a number of personal trials that were physically and emotionally very painful. And I found out that the answers are simple…but it took me a LONG time to figure it out. So take this as hard-earned wisdom…from one friend to another.

Here’s what I found out…when you focus on the obvious problem – the pain - you’re not SOLVING the problem itself.

Because your back pain is really just a SYMPTOM.

The Breakthrough...

20 years of back pain and lack of taking care of myself led me to the biggest break-through of my life.

I got sick.

And I mean REALLY sick.

I started having all kinds of weird, scary symptoms – even weirder than what I was used to having with my back pain.

More of my joints started aching. My hair started thinning. My skin broke out like a teenager – I got acne like the kid in High School that we used to make fun of.

Then one day, I woke up and one side of my face was swollen so badly that I couldn’t open my eye.

The doctors were baffled – they had no idea what was wrong with me.

After weeks of tests and consultations, it was finally determined that I had an autoimmune disorder.

Autoimmune disease is when your body attacks itself, thinking that it’s attacking a foreign invader, like a disease or virus. There are dozens of autoimmune diseases these days…like MS, Lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

When your body and mind are balanced and healthy, your immune system naturally defends itself against diseases and viruses – it doesn’t attack itself.

It made a strange kind of sense that I had developed a disorder where my body attacked itself from the inside. After all, I’d already been doing it to myself for years, by letting my physical and emotional health get WAY out of balance.

The side effects from the drugs I was given to treat my symptoms were severe, and I decided that I would DO WHATEVER IT TOOK to avoid having to take these toxic medications ever again.

The bottom line is that I’d been looking in the wrong places for the solution to my back pain.

I thought that the solution to my back pain was in doing something (or having something done to) my back – I was looking OUTSIDE - when all the time, the solution was INSIDE.

This was a huge “Ah-Ha” for me. It forever changed my understanding of back pain.

It was the first time that I realized that traditional medicine has got it all wrong. Because when you go to your doctor, you (and your doctor) focus on the PAIN. And pain is just a SYMPTOM.

Pain is your body’s way of saying “Hey, something’s wrong here. We’re out of balance, and you’d better find the cause soon, or things are going to get worse.”

And what do we typically do when our body enters into this critical conversation with us?

We take a pill.

Or we get a massage.

We go to the chiropractor.

If that doesn’t work, we have surgery.

We look OUTSIDE ourselves for the “fix”.

What I realized on this journey that I’ve now been on for the last 10 years is this:

You Can’t ‘Fight’ Pain”

There’s a wonderful quote from Carl Jung, “what you resist, persists”. I discovered that focusing all my attention on the pain only makes the pain worse.

And the pain is not the problem. The pain is simply the physical manifestation of an imbalance in our thinking, our body or our spirit.

By constantly focusing on THE PROBLEM, I was just making it worse. Because my whole life had become the problem.

As I figured out the SOLUTION to my autoimmune disease, I also found the solution to what had been out of balance in my life. And my back pain went away.

You can’t “fight” pain, you have to work with it, and figure out what it has to teach you. This is where you’ll find the true cause.

And I had gone out of my way to ignore the lessons. To cover it up. To silence the voice.

It’s not like my back can “talk”. But in fact, it had been “talking” to me all these years. I’d just been too afraid, too stubborn, to listen. So my body took another path to get my attention – an autoimmune disease.

And this time, I listened.

The REAL REASON Why Most Back Pain Programs Fail…And What To Do About It

Every doctor, chiropractor or physical therapist I saw during the “back pain years” zeroed in directly on the area of pain in my lower back and right buttock. Never anywhere else.

Most back pain programs fail for a few very simple reasons.

First, back pain is the end result of so many things.

Like your state of mind.

If you’re constantly bombarding yourself with mental chatter that tells you you’re a loser, your back is “bad”, “stupid”, you “hate” your back…well, how can you expect it to get better?

Second, the way you go about your repetitive daily activities – the way you sit, stand, walk and move – affects your spine more than any exercise you can think of. Because you do these things ALL THE TIME.

Did you ever see a movie where the hero is hanging from a rope off the edge of a cliff, and he’s hanging onto the villain as well, trying to save him? (because that’s what the good guys in movies do).

At some point, the friction from the rope, combined with the weight of the two guys hanging from it causes the rope to start to fray. Eventually, you know it’s going to completely break.

If the hero would just let go of the bad guy, he’d be able to save himself, because the rope wouldn’t break so quickly, and the other good guys would be able to pull him up to the top of the cliff.

The structures in your spine are the same way…they can only take so much friction and stress. You might not be aware that your back is “fraying” until you make a sudden move one day and something “snaps”.

By the time you’re in pain, by the time you’ve herniated a disc or whatever, you’ve already been doing stuff to damage your spine FOR YEARS.

Focusing on the area of pain alone and trying o treat it, or fix it, like you would fix a flat tire on your car, is just backwards.

You have to let go of the “bad guys” in your habits and reduce the damage to your spine.

Any “treatment” you get, has to include the two most important things that keep you back healthy – the way you constantly THINK and the way you constantly MOVE.

I Found The Keys To Breaking Out Of The Back Pain Prison…And I’d Like To Share Them With YOU

Once I figured out that my back pain wasn’t just about my back, my whole life changed.

It was difficult to keep these new discoveries to myself.

What are we doing differently at my new place?

Well, for one thing, we look at the WHOLE PERSON. Not just a piece of you.

We start with your overall body posture and movement habits.

We are habitual creatures, including in the way we move. Our movement patterns are established early in life, and layered with information from our parents, our injuries, our sports and activities and the way we think about ourselves.

With exercise, as with all other body actions, we practice our “default” patterns. Being right or left handed is a good example of a dominant pattern in our bodies…and our brains.

Here’s another example.

Cross your arms over your chest. Notice which arm you folded on top and how you tucked your hands.

Now cross your arms the opposite way.

How weird does that feel? Could you easily figure out how to do the opposite pattern?

Your first arm cross is your “default”; the one you’ll do every single time -unconsciously. These patterns exist in everything you do…and they’re 95% unconscious…unless you focus on changing them.

In watching my patients at the clinic, I noticed that they were always practicing their default patterns…making their bad habits EVEN STRONGER.

Now that I’ve seen the proof over that last 10 years that long-term, permanent back pain relief is not only possible, but inevitable, with my program, I’m ready to teach my techniques to YOU.

Well, of course! This makes perfect sense – your back feels like you’ve got a hot poker sticking in it all the time, you’re leg’s ON FIRE, and this pain is definitely the source of the problem.

Your doctor’s told you that your disc is “herniated”, “degenerated” or otherwise deficient. Or that there’s something specifically “wrong” with your spine. You have a diagnosis.

Maybe you’ve been told that you just have something called “mechanical low back pain”. This is another way of saying, “your posture or alignment is somehow responsible. We don’t know exactly how to help you with it, so good luck!”

If there’s something wrong with your spine, it’s reasonable to assume that this is where the answer lies, right?

Wrong!

The real cause of your back pain is muscle tension. No matter what your “diagnosis”, your pain is coming from the natural protective tension in the muscles of your back.

What happens when a muscle is constantly being squeezed, pressured and compressed really tightly?

First, it can’t move.

Second, it doesn’t get the things it needs to function: circulation, water, nerve conduction.

It can’t move, and it WON”T HEAL.

How do you get something that has been under pressure to let go? You have to find the “release valve”.

The secret to YOUR release valve lies in your most basic habits.

Habits like the way you move, think and nurture yourself.

Most doctors, chiropractors and physical therapists rarely explore your life beyond their treatment room – your PERSONAL BLUEPRINT.

Even if you’re doing the “right” exercises…you’re probably using the same movement patterns, strengthening the same habits that got your back messed up in the first place.

It’s a simple rule:

If you practice crooked, you get STRONG CROOKED!

Which means you’re making your muscle tension WORSE.

There’s another thing that contributes to muscle tension.

You probably already know what it is….STRESS.

The muscles of your spine are uniquely sensitive to stress. And the only way you can control stress is FROM THE INSIDE.

Your back responds to your thoughts and beliefs. And if you’re constantly bombarding yourself with thoughts that your back is “bad”, “stupid” or “the worst”, it will cooperate with your mind.

Every time you think these thoughts, you’re poisoning the environment INSIDE YOUR OWN BODY.

Your back is a part of YOU...

Your body can either be nurtured or poisoned by what you put in it: junk food, pain or anti-inflammatory medications, and cigarette smoke are all toxic to the body.

And an unhealthy internal environment does not support healing – and causes muscle tension.

Getting enough oxygen is another “release valve” for muscle tension. Good breathing is the keystone to a healthy back – and if you have back pain, you’re probably not breathing deeply and fully.

A simple way to improve your breathing right now is to sit comfortably, with shoulder blades heavy down your back, and allow your belly to be soft as you deeply inhale and exhale.

Soft belly breathing stimulates a particular nerve, called the vagus nerve, which causes RELAXATION in all the muscles of your body.

If you smoke, your chances of recovering are slim to none.

Smoking actually causes low back pain. And smokers rarely ever recover from back pain, even when they have a variety of other treatments.

So there are other causes of your back pain beside just your “diagnosis” (or lack of one)…

  1. The way you sit, stand and move…24/7
  2. Your thinking habits, your “state of mind”, and what you say to yourself, how you feed your spirit
  3. What you eat, drink and breathe

>> Belief #2: Believing That Once the Pain Gets Better You Can Relax and Forget About It

If you’re coasting, you’re going DOWNHILL.

Once your pain resolves, you have to remain vigilant, because you will constantly be sucked back in to your “default state” – your natural state of being that caused the problem in the first place.

Your movement, thinking and behavior patterns are stubborn, and you have to build STRONG NEW HABITS to counter-act the old patterns that caused your muscle tension and pain.

Lots of people assume that they’re home free once the pain goes away – or gets tolerably less, and this is the time when it’s easy to fall back into old habits.

A word here about what happens when you’re told “there’s nothing wrong”.

This pronouncement often gets people really discouraged. And it’s because we’re looking for “a reason” for the pain – this is only natural.

The thing is, there IS a reason for you pain…it’s MUSCLE TENSION.

Mental, emotional and physical stress cause significant changes in your muscles, nerves and blood vessels, which lead to tension and pain. Just because your doctor can’t see the big stuff, like disc herniations and degeneration, doesn’t mean that there’s no reason for your pain.

And if back pain due to tension is your response to stress, your personal blueprint, then you’ll need to create habits that address it.
